“King Wenceslaus” was actually a duke named Vaclav. Duke Vaclav ruled Bohemia (the Czech Republic) with Christian justice until his pagan brother Boleslav assassinated him. The duke was a devout Christian whose short life was riddled with political intrigue, murder and pagan influences.
Vaclav’s Christian grandparents ruled Bohemia at a time when the Slavic nations were [...]

Down in the bleak December bay
The ghostly vessel stands away;
Her spars and halyards white with ice,
Under the dark December skies.
A hundred souls, in company,
Have left the vessel pensively, -
Have reached the frosty desert there,
And touched it with the knees of prayer.
And now the day begins to dip,
The night begins to lower
Over the bay, and over [...]

In today’s excerpt-at the end of the 19th century, Charles Dickens’ short novel, A Christmas Carol, had readership second only to the Bible’s:
“If only Ebenezer Scrooge had not, in the excitement of his transformation from miser to humanitarian, diverged from the traditional Christmas goose to surprise Bob Cratchit with a turkey ‘twice the size of [...]

And it still can be all this.

My maternal grandpa was an American ”Commando” during WWII (the Green Berets weren’t in existence yet, so he got British-style special forces training.). In honor of him, here is a story I wrote, based on truth.
He was a good and a brave man, and deserves to be honored.
Many of the incidents in the story are true, and [...]

I thought, after hinting at the conversations I’ve had with my home(s), I’d give some tips on how you, too, can command your home to get good results, and improve areas of clutter, misuses, constant dirtiness, or what have you.
First off, realize that your house is listening. It’s always listening. It knows what you and the other [...]

Behind him lay the gray Azores,
Behind the Gates of Hercules;
Before him not the ghost of shores;
Before him only shoreless seas.
The good mate said: “Now must we pray,
For lo! the very stars are gone.
Brave Adm’r’l, speak! What shall I say?”
“Why, say: ‘Sail on! sail! and on!’”

“My men grow mutinous day by day;
My men grow ghastly, wan [...]

The house looks a bit sad without its snuggling summer foilage. But it also fills me with inspiration for remodeling and redecorating ideas. In many instances, redecorating is not the right word, as the house has never had a lick of wall paper, and in many places, not even paint. So I will get to [...]

The large room in the basement of Katherine’s old home will be two rooms: an office for Will, and a master bedroom.
I plan to leave a hallway down the chimney side of the room, leading to the children’s bedrooms, and of course, the cellar and spare room (storage).
If I put a wardrobe in the spare [...]

It is difficult to get good pictures up here, because there is very little to stand on, save the stairs. I’d rather not risk making another hole in the ceiling. Not that the ceiling is so much, but you can’t predict very well what you’ll land on below.
Still, I’d like to put a work room up [...]

I had fun recently, beginning to seriously sort through some things at the house we want to buy. I know I have barely touched what’s there, but already I have discovered some very cool things.

Here is a child’s sailor suit, a bit dusty, but otherwise in excellent condition.

In the living room, I found, scattered in [...]

About a mile from the place we wish to buy is a duck pond. Actually, it is just two low spots in the fields on either side of the road, which fill up with spring and summer rains, and winter snows.
Here there is an abundance of waterfowl, including your usuals, like Canada geese, mallard ducks, [...]

This is a double building right next to the house. It apparently was a tenant house, and also a wash house. There is a wringer washer in a far corner, almost buried by more cardboard boxes…most of them empty.

Here is the back side of the garage. The building is not in such good shape, but a new [...]

Elm trees, and loads of catmint.

Moss, moss, everywhere…and lichens, too. That bit of weed bud hanging out in space is caught in the web of a barn spider…aka catface. They were expected residents.

 ”Drunken berries” grow all over, including over the cistern and pump jack. I don’t know if there is a more scientific name for these [...]
